Why You Should Consider Steam Cleaning Tile And Grout

There are several products out there on the market that can be used for cleaning tiles and grouting but there are also several reasons why steam cleaning tile and grout is actually the best way to go. It can be quicker than other methods and keeping this kind of thing clean is always important because when it gets darker due to dirt it does not look as nice and obviously there is then bacteria living between the tiles.

When you are looking at keeping it clean do be aware of the chance that some of the products out there can actually cause problems later on as they can work away at the plaster and this can eventually damage it. If it does end up damaged or brittle then obviously it shall need replaced which is causing you some extra expense.

The problem is that a lot of the cleaners are acid based which means they are actually quite harsh cleaners and as you are using them you can often end up pushing the dirt particles further into the plaster. You can notice this with white grout best of all because the darker it is the more dirt there is inside it and it does mean you have to work that bit harder to get it nice and clean.

If the tiles are on the floor then clearly you should not have the white variety because it is going to pick up the dirt quicker than you can clean it so instead you must use one which is already dark. This does make it trickier to know when it is needing cleaned however by using steam you know that you are not blasting it with chemicals so you can easily do it when you think it is actually required.

Steam cleaning has the real advantage of only using water and not a single chemical is used at any point. It means that it is not going to eat away at it the same and nor is it going to weaken it which is a possibility with the acid chemicals so this does mean they are going to last you a lot longer.

How it works is it uses not only very hot water but also intense pressure and what you actually get is called dry steam and this can blast out the various particles that make up dirt and grime. As it is dry you do not have to worry yourself about water seeping into it like it would with a pressure washer and it blasts the particles out and not further in.

You really must look at resealing the tiles once you have cleaned them because it not only protects them but it also stops dirt from working its way back in quickly. This kind of job really should be done either once or twice a year but obviously this really does depend on where they are situated as some tiles need to be cleaned a lot more than that.

Steam cleaning tile and grout is therefore a very good idea because it is actually better for the health of the tiles due to cleaning them without damaging them. You also do not have any ongoing costs apart from the product to reseal the tiles because once you buy the machine then you require nothing else.

Ceramic Tiles and Tile Flooring: How to Clean Them Safely and Effectively

]]>

Ceramic tiles have been a popular choice among homeowners for many reasons. The overwhelming reasons are most definitely a combination of their good looks, their incredible strength, and their ability to add an aura of elegance to every room. Getting ceramic tile in your house is most definitely a great choice, but in order to keep it looking it’s absolute best for years to come, you’re going to need to get a proper cleaning regimen down. In order to help you decide how to clean your particular style of ceramic tile, here are a few cleaning tips:

Cleaning Glazed Tiles

Glazed tiles are the easiest of the bunch to clean because they’re coated with the shiny, protective glaze that is designed to repel water and dirt. As far as daily maintenance goes, sweeping or vacuuming up any dust bunnies should suffice. For deeper cleaning sessions, a mop and warm water with a mild detergent should do the trick. Just be sure to sweep or vacuum the floors thoroughly before you start cleaning with a wet mop.

Cleaning Unglazed Tiles

Unglazed tiles generally require a bit more TLC than glazed tiles because they lack that protective coating. However, if you can keep up with cleaning them daily, you should be fine. To thoroughly clean unglazed ceramic tiles, you will need to sweep/vacuum and mop them regularly. Dust and dirt tends to show a lot easier on unglazed tiles, so you will have to be on top of your game to keep these looking great every day.

Cleaning the Grout

The grout is often the most difficult part of tile flooring to keep clean. But it’s extremely important if you want your floors to appear clean and well-maintained. A great way to keep grout white is to clean it with a solution of 50/50 solution of hydrogen peroxide and water. Another effective way to clean tile grout is by using powdered oxygen bleach. Many find this favorable because it doesn’t produce harsh fumes, it’s color and fabric safe, and removes all food and grease stains with minimal scrubbing. The oxygen ions work with the stain molecules by breaking them into pieces that rinse away easily. To clean grout and tiles with oxygen bleach, mix it with warm water and stir it until it dissolves. Then pour the mixture onto the file so the grout lines are flooded. Let the solution sit on the grout for 15 minutes–the longer you let it sit, the less cleaning you have to do. After you’ve let it sit, scrub the grout with a scrub brush and mop the solution away. Once you have the grout clean, try adding oxygen bleach to mop water for a daily effective cleaning solution.

Best of luck with keeping your tile flooring clean and looking its best. As long as you keep a regular cleaning routine down, you’re sure to see great results, and in turn, make less work for yourself.

How To Choose The Best Carpet Cleaners

Edit Article |

Posted: Feb 18, 2008 |Comments: 0

]]>

When you have carpet, after a while it becomes difficult to keep it clean, using the traditional tools such as brooms and vacuums. When it becomes impossible for you to get your carpet cleaned, you may have to start searching for the best carpet cleaning company that you can afford to hire. There are many DIY solutions and products that a homeowner may use to clean their own carpets but choosing a professional carpet cleaner should be a top priority.

- How to Choose?

Due to the fact that most of us have carpets in one or more rooms in our homes, you should start your search for the best carpet cleaners by asking family and friends to give you a reference for a cleaner that they themselves have previously hired.

A great review from someone you know and trust is a great way to find home carpet cleaners who have done a good job in the past. If you have asked around and no one seems to be able to point you towards a cleaner, you can request that the professional carpet cleaning company furnish you with a reference or review from previous clients. A good company will have a list of happy customers for you to look at and you can also check with the Better Business Bureau to see the history of a specific company.

You may want to avoid using a professional carpet cleaning who solicits your business on the telephone or a company who goes door to door trying to drum up business. A company who sets their price on a per room basis is also a home carpet cleaner company that you should be skeptical about, because different homes will have rooms that differ in shapes and size. A reputable professional carpet cleaning company will charge you for the entire area that will be cleaned.

A few carpet cleaning professionals will list the name brand cleaners that they use but you should be aware that just because they use these cleaners, you cannot assume that they are endorsed by or have a partnership with these brand name cleaners.

Once you have contacted a carpet cleaning company, you should have them visit your home to physically check the area that needs to be cleaned. You should never accept an estimate that a company gives you via email or a phone call.

A professional should be at your home to see how much cleaning your carpets need and to let you know if other areas might be in need of a good professional cleaning. The representative of the cleaning company should then write out an agreement, detailing all the work that will done and you should only be charged extra in extreme cases.

- Setup an Interview

After you have selected a few companies, you should then setup an interview with each of them. Make a list of questions that you would like to ask during the interview. You should ask them these questions or ones that are similar.

How many years have your company been in business? Depending on the answer to this question, you can learn a lot about how reputable the company is and how much experience they have with carpet cleaning.

What kind and how much training are management officials and cleaning technicians required to have?

A cleaning company that is serious about doing a good job and having a great reputation will require that their workers are educated and certified from top organization and companies. They will also ensure that employees continue to be educated so that they always know the best ways to clean different carpets and stains.

What are your base prices and what techniques require extra charges? Can you tell the prices of each service that you offer?

For your soiled carpet, what techniques will be used to get it looking and smelling new again? There are many techniques that can be applied to your carpet stains, so ask the technician, what the best method to apply is.

If you have furniture that will need to be moved, ask the technician who will have to move them and do they apply extra charges if they move the furniture themselves.

- Get the Best Carpet Cleaners Contract

Before you let the cleaning company into your home to get started on the job, you should always sign a contract so that you have all their charges and promises in writing. This written promise can also be a simple invoice but it should list the full price that you will be charged.

Scan the document so that you can spot any discrepancies such as extra charges for difference processes like a deep cleaning or conditioning. Those extra services are usually already included in the total price given.

In the United States, you can find that over 30,000 professional carpet cleaners have a great reputation and will do a great job on your carpets but you also have to be aware that there are less than reputable people and companies who are looking to rip-off homeowners who simply want their carpets cleaned. Do your research before choosing a professional carpet cleaner and do not select one simply because they are the cheapest.

Kitchen and Bathroom Grout Cleaning

Edit Article |

Posted: Sep 04, 2010 |Comments: 0

]]>

“How do you go about cleaning bathroom grout?” and “How do you go about cleaning kitchen grout?”  These are questions that I have certainly asked.  Grout starts out as either white or as the color that best matches the tile.  Over time, however, I think that everyone’s grout converges to the same color:  Grey.  Ugh!  So what can you do?

Well, to answer this, I looked to an expert:   Tim Carter, who writes the “Ask the Builder” syndicated column,  has on his site a video where he demonstrates what he reports is the best method that he has found to clean grout.  The cleaner that he uses is oxy-bleach.

Chemically, the oxy-bleach is called sodium percarbonate, and it is what is found in the cleaning products OxiClean and StainSolver.  It is sometimes referred to as dried hydrogren peroxide, and it is an oxidizing agent that is eco-friendly.  When it is dissolved in water it releases Hydrogren peroxide and soda ash (sodum carbonate).  Hydrogen Peroxide decomposes into water and oxygen.  It is the release of the oxygen molecules that cleans the grout.

To use, dissolve ½ cup of oxygen bleach crystals in one gallon of warm water.

To clean floor grout in the kitchen or bathroom, pour the solution onto the floor and let it rest for about 30 minutes.  Then use a brush to scrub the grout.  After scrubbing, wipe away the liquid and then rinse the floor with clean water.  You must rinse the surface or else you will see a white powder residue once the solution dries.  Repeat as needed.  Note that the solution breaks down over time, and so cannot be stored.  You must make up fresh solution each day.

To clean grout on walls in the kitchen or bathroom, mix up the solution and put it into a spray bottle.  Spray the solution onto the walls.  Continue to spray the walls periodically over the course of 30 minutes.  You need to keep the walls wet. After about 30 minutes, scrub the walls with a brush and then rinse with clean water.  If you have hard water, you may first have to soak the walls with a vinegar solution.  You may also want to try to make a paste by using less water.  Please note, however, that the paste has to remain wet for the cleaning action to occur.

Indeed this cleaning method will take some elbow grease, but it is effective.  Additionally, the product is environmentally safe.  The cleaning mechanism of oxy-bleach is based on oxygen atoms – the same stuff we need to breathe!  Compare this with using chlorine bleach, which works by releasing chlorine gas – which is toxic to humans and animals.

In addition to cleaning grout, you can use oxy-bleach to clean many other things:  laundry; wood decks; roof cleaning; carpets; deodorizing of garbage disposals and drains; and for general purpose cleaning of boats, fiberglass, dentures, picnic coolers, aquariums, mold, mildew, grease, wine stains, food stains, patio furniture, and mud stains.  Remember to keep it wet, and that the longer it soaks, the less that you have to scrub.

Services Offered By Carpet Cleaners

Edit Article |

]]>

You probably know that your local carpet cleaner offers carpet and upholstery cleaning but do you know about other services offered. Most cleaners offer more than just carpet cleaning. Keep reading and learn about some services that your carpet cleaners probably also offer which you should take advantage of.

One other service offered by carpet cleaners is drapery cleaning. Your drapes need attention too. They are constantly exposed to dust and soil which can settle on them. If you burn candles they can also develop a build up of soot. Ask your carpet cleaner about having your drapes cleaned to restore them. Most cleaners will even be able to clean them on site. Another service offered by many carpet cleaning companies is area rug cleaning. Many area rugs require special cleaning methods. Some area rugs can be cleaned at your home but many rugs like Oriental rugs, wool or silks need to be cleaned under controlled conditions. These rugs must be cleaned at the carpet cleaners shopped. To protect your investment in your area rugs you should consult your carpet cleaner about having them clean your area rugs. Yet another cleaning service offered by carpet cleaners is pressure washing. Carpet cleaners who use the steam system of carpet cleaning already have equipment capable of 1000, 1500 or even 2000 pounds per square inch of water pressure. Many cleaners use this cleaning equipment to add pressure washing to their list of services. This is useful for you because they can clean your homes siding, driveways, patios, sidewalks and more. It is a great service to have done, especially if they are already going to be at your home. This just scratches the surface of the services offered by carpet cleaners. Yours may also offer water removal, deodorizing, odor removal or one of a million other services.

Hopefully this article has encouraged you to ask your local carpet cleaner about additional services that they offer. Remember, most are more than just carpet cleaners. And if you are a carpet cleaner I hope you use this article for ideas of other services to offer. Good luck.

How to Seal Floor Tiles and Grout

Well maintained tiles definitely enhance the looks of your home. But at times, tiles sustain certain damage due the penetration of the moisture into the surface. This moisture results in stains that are hard to remove. These stains take away the beauty of your tiles and also damage them over time. In that case the only solution to preserve the beauty of your tiles is the application of sealant on your tiles and the grout. Sealant layer acts as a moisture resistant and stretch the lifespan of the tiles and preserve your tiles’ beauty for longer period of time.

Required Material

-    Acrylic floor finish
-    Brush
-    Penetrative tile sealant
-    Topical tile sealant
-    Water

Directions

1.    Glazed or non-cemented tiles are usually water resistant. However, you can determine whether your surface needs a layer of sealant or not with the help of simple test. Take small amount of water and pour it on the surface and inspect it for some time. If you find that the color of the surface darkens, seal it. If no discoloration occurs that means there is no need to apply the layer of sealant.

2.    Before applying the sealant, clean the surface properly. Make sure that no debris or dirt is left behind. Purchased the best sealant specified for the type of tiles you have. Start from the vertical surface. Apply sealant in an upward direction to avoid any stripes or trickling of the sealant. For horizontal surface, always work from inside out, i.e. from one wall towards another wall. Apply sealant evenly on the entire surface. Let the sealant dry for the required amount of time recommended in manufacturer’s manual.

3.    After applying the topical sealant layer to your tiles and grout, now is the time to apply a layer of acrylic floor finish. A layer of acrylic finish provides a protection to the tiles that keep them secure from routine’s wear and tear. This layer is also called as wear layer for tiles that provides protection to the tiles and tile sealant underneath. Follow the instructions given on the manual of acrylic floor finish and leave it to dry for the time specified on the manual.

4.    For stones or outdoor tiles, use penetrating sealant. Two layers of this sealant will be enough, but make sure that the first layer is dried off completely before applying the second layer. Apply the layer of sealant on the tiles or stones and let it dry. Later apply the second layer and leave it to dry.

Suggestions

-    The ideal time to apply sealant is 2 weeks after of laying tile and grout.
-    To get best results from sealant, let it dry for about 72 hours. However, the normal time for sealants to dry is between 24 to 72 hours. This time differs according to the different brands of the sealant.

Tile and Grout Cleaning

Tile is one of the most common materials used in many homes for flooring, shower enclosures and kitchen backsplashes. It provides a very durable surface that can be cleaned easily and will retain its luster and color for many years if maintained properly. The challenge with most tile installations is that even though the tile is very durable, the grout used in the spaces between the tiles is porous and allows dirt to collect in its pores.

Proper care of granite countertops ensures the durability and longevity expected from this premium product. But homeowners aren’t always familiar with the proper methods for cleaning granite countertops, so we offer the following:

Cleaning Granite Countertops

As each natural stone or mineral surface can vary, your granite countertop may have specific cleaning requirements specified by the supplier or builder. The following method is a general guide for polished granite countertops:

For Everyday Cleaning

1. Do not use abrasives or harsh cleaners, as they can wear down and damage the polished surface.

2. Wipe the granite countertop down lightly with a dry, soft cloth to remove crumbs or debris.

3. Use warm water and a very small amount of ph-balanced dish soap and wipe down the surface.

4. Dry lightly with a dishtowel.

For Periodic or Weekly Cleaning

1. Wipe the countertop down lightly with a dry, soft cloth.

2. Spray a mist of recommended granite cleaner over the surface.

3. Let the product soak for approximately 1 minute.

4. Clean with a sponge or soft towel or rag.

5. Buff and dry the surface with a clean towel or paper towel.

Maintaining Granite Countertops

Granite is one of the hardest stone surfaces there is, second only to diamonds, but granite is created from molten rock, and can contain softer minerals. While granite countertops may be honed, in other words, have a flat finish, a polished surface is recommended for kitchen granite countertops.

1. Avoid letting acidic foods and liquids, such as wine, vinegar or lemon, set on the countertop, as it can affect the surface. Wiping down the countertop after use can help keep damaging products from being left in contact with the surface.

2. Use a cutting board for food preparation, do not cut food directly on the countertop.

3. Do not use powder cleaning products or harsh cleaning products.

4. Use a penetrating sealant recommended by your supplier or builder annually. Make sure the granite countertop sealant is one that actually penetrates the surface, otherwise a cloudy film may remain, and the surface may need to be stripped and resealed to get your shine back.

Removing Stains from Granite Countertops

Granite countertops are often chosen over marble since they are less porous and more stain resistant. But if you should happen to have a stain, remove it by mixing a ‘paste’ of:

One Tablespoon of PH-balanced, mild dishwashing soap;
½ Cup of Flour

Add water to make a pasty consistency. Cover stain with the solution, and leave for one hour. Remove the hardened paste carefully using the edge of a credit card or wooden utensil. Rinse the area. If the stain remains, try the solution again, leaving overnight covered with a plastic wrap. Remove and rinse.

Bull Terrier Aggression Behavior

It might also very well be an impulse or trigger that was not handled correctly when your bull terrier was a puppy. Perhaps another puppy or dog attacked your terrier at a young age. No matter the cause of the aggression you’re dealing with, you need to face the problem and work towards helping your pet find a
