Ceramic tiles have been a popular choice among homeowners for many reasons. The overwhelming reasons are most definitely a combination of their good looks, their incredible strength, and their ability to add an aura of elegance to every room. Getting ceramic tile in your house is most definitely a great choice, but in order to keep it looking it’s absolute best for years to come, you’re going to need to get a proper cleaning regimen down. In order to help you decide how to clean your particular style of ceramic tile, here are a few cleaning tips:

Cleaning Glazed Tiles

Glazed tiles are the easiest of the bunch to clean because they’re coated with the shiny, protective glaze that is designed to repel water and dirt. As far as daily maintenance goes, sweeping or vacuuming up any dust bunnies should suffice. For deeper cleaning sessions, a mop and warm water with a mild detergent should do the trick. Just be sure to sweep or vacuum the floors thoroughly before you start cleaning with a wet mop.

Cleaning Unglazed Tiles

Unglazed tiles generally require a bit more TLC than glazed tiles because they lack that protective coating. However, if you can keep up with cleaning them daily, you should be fine. To thoroughly clean unglazed ceramic tiles, you will need to sweep/vacuum and mop them regularly. Dust and dirt tends to show a lot easier on unglazed tiles, so you will have to be on top of your game to keep these looking great every day.

Cleaning the Grout

The grout is often the most difficult part of tile flooring to keep clean. But it’s extremely important if you want your floors to appear clean and well-maintained. A great way to keep grout white is to clean it with a solution of 50/50 solution of hydrogen peroxide and water. Another effective way to clean tile grout is by using powdered oxygen bleach. Many find this favorable because it doesn’t produce harsh fumes, it’s color and fabric safe, and removes all food and grease stains with minimal scrubbing. The oxygen ions work with the stain molecules by breaking them into pieces that rinse away easily. To clean grout and tiles with oxygen bleach, mix it with warm water and stir it until it dissolves. Then pour the mixture onto the file so the grout lines are flooded. Let the solution sit on the grout for 15 minutes–the longer you let it sit, the less cleaning you have to do. After you’ve let it sit, scrub the grout with a scrub brush and mop the solution away. Once you have the grout clean, try adding oxygen bleach to mop water for a daily effective cleaning solution.

Best of luck with keeping your tile flooring clean and looking its best. As long as you keep a regular cleaning routine down, you’re sure to see great results, and in turn, make less work for yourself.
